FAQ

How old do athletes need to be to play basketball?

K-8th grade are welcome to play basketball.

Will our coach contact us?

Yes, once our teams have been assigned and every player has been placed on a roster.

How are teams assigned?

Teams will be assigned via a player draft which will consist of a head coach for each team that will select their players based on player evaluations from our TYAA Basketball Skills Clinic.

Can I choose what coach or what team my child is on?

Unfortunately, no. To help avoid confusion, please see below.

Accommodations that will be made:
1)      Only siblings (brothers and sisters) will be guaranteed a spot on same team if in same age division.
2)      Players that have a parent volunteering as a head coach will automatically be placed on the team their parent is coaching.

Accommodations that will not be made:

1)      For transportation reasons.
2)      The player or the player’s parents requested a certain coach.
3)      Other relatives such as cousins are on a team.
4)      Aunt, Uncle, or family friend is coaching a team.

How does the draft work?

Please see our TYAA Basketball Draft Procedures for info on the draft.

What is TYAA Basketball Skills Clinic?

Our skills clinic will be a one day event (approx. 1 hour session per age group) where players will come out, run some defensive, shooting, dribbling, and passing drills. Coaches will be present to help run the drills as well as evaluate skill set. It is a great opportunity to come out, have fun, and knock the dust off prior to practices.

What if my child has a conflict and cannot attend the TYAA Basketball Skills Clinic?

No worries, every player that signs up to play basketball will be placed on a team.

When and where is practice?

Practice schedule will be set once the coaches and teams are assigned. Practices depend on age and gym availability. Practices are held at TES, TMS, Bethel Baptist Church, and some at SIHS. Typically, practices run for an hour, twice a week anywhere from 6-8:30. Younger teams will have the early times slots. Practices will begin the week of December 3rd.

When and where are games?

In previous seasons, games have been played on Saturday beginning mid to late December. The game schedule is set by the league, not our coaches. Game schedules will be circulated to parents when approved by the league and sent to coaches. The season goes through February and playoffs may take us through the early part of March. Games will be played at various schools in the Troutman and Mooresville area.
